In Texas, Mexican cuisine is largely sought after as people there tend to lean towards a more spicy food palette. So if you are an international student, we have compiled for you some Mexican restaurants you can try out when in Texas.
1. Fonda San Miguel, Austin
This restaurant has its original chef serving unique Mexican cuisine ever since its opening in 1975. Its food and ambiance are equally pleasing. It has a lovely terrace and multicolored yet attractive interior which makes it an amazing spot to enjoy tasty Mexican dishes which are served with handmade flour and corn tortillas. The mole poblano is everyones favorite here along with cochinita pibil.
2. Hugo’s, Houston
This is owned by one of the best chefs in Houston. It has a diverse menu which is full of exceptional and innovative dishes. This makes this place perfect for an audacious eater. Even though most items on the menu are traditional items, there are also various seafood options like seafood cocktail or lobster tacos.
3. The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation, Houston
This restaurant is almost like a landmark in Houston. The Original Ninfa’s is known as the pioneer of fajitas. The best thing there is the eternal avocado-tomatillo salsa. Another thing it is famous for is the beef flank steak fajitas. You will also find fluffy, homemade flour tortillas there which you can have with the traditional fajitas.
4. Joe T. Garcia’s, Fort Worth
This one is a family-run Tex-Mex joint which opened in 1935. The menu hasn’t changed a bit and its chicken and beef fajitas are to die for. The ambiance is pretty amazing as well, as it has a lush patio.
5. Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery, San Antonio
This place really adds to your experience of the whole place. It serves Tex-Mex food along with traditional Mexican fare throughout the day and night. You can grab a margarita along with some sweet bread. In your background you will have a mariachi band running.
